Director, Reach Out and Read Children’s Hospital
Dr. Szumlas presently works as an attending physician in the Pediatric Primary Care Center at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. The Center serves a large underserved population and is also a major center for medical student and resident training. His areas of interest include asthma, medical education, quality improvement, and literacy. He presently serves as the director of the Reach Out and Read program and regional Reach Out and Read Coalition. He is active in the hospital’s health literacy group and has participated in producing several educational programs on the topic. Dr. Szumlas has been part of Cincinnati Children’s Hospital for over fifteen years. He served as the medical director of the PPCC for three years and has also completed a faculty development fellowship at Michigan State University. Before moving to Cincinnati, he completed his pediatric residency training at Vanderbilt University and attended medical school at the University of Iowa.
